GOTY is between Batman: AC and Skyrim, with Zelda as a potential dark horse.

Portal 2 was phenomenal, but usually games from earlier in the year don't get wins because we don't remember much of them this far on (even if it was incredible.)

Battlefield 3 won't win because of it's lackluster single player and Uncharted 3 won't win because it's sitting in the shadow of Uncharted 2.

That's how I read the situation anyw...

The full story is this.

Originally Grand Theft Auto IV was a PS3 exclusive. But Microsoft was banging down their door with money and the costs for making the game were getting out of hand (100 million dollars).

In order to make money on GTA IV R* and Sony worked out a compromise. That was that a future R* game would be a Sony exclusive. That future game was either going to be LA Noire or Read Dead Redemption. But R* decided to make those multiplatform. I...

Hopefully this is what we'll see more of next generation. TV resolution looks like it'll stay at 1920x1080p for the foreseeable future, so ideally next gen will just be about hitting that 60hz mark with full HD, with room left over for extra goodies like tesselation and more detailed physics. Seems likely since vRAM and processers are getting cheaper by the day.

And before some monster PC rig owner chimes in I'd just like to say that I know you've had these ...

Extremely well written article. Excellent counterpoint to Eurogamer's review.

For Uncharted to get a score like this from Famitsu is quite good. Famitsu is a very Japanese magazine, and the Japanese have very different tastes from Western audiences.

Most Western games don't sell well in Japan.

My logic is not terrible. The more time spent with a given technology the cheaper it becomes. This will allow lower end studios to slowly catch up to higher end studios like ND who have the money to make these games.

Budgets are as much a determinant for good graphics as talent. That's how a second rate developer like Guerilla can make awesome looking games like Killzone 2/3.

And PC games have not looked better than Uncharted for years. A few individu...

This, this game right here proves we don't need a new console cycle yet. When other developers start to hit the ceiling that Naughty Dog is at, then it's time.

There are only even a few PC games that look better than Uncharted 3, and those use graphics cards that cost as much as the console itself.

My guess is 1-1.2 million.

I remember hearing non-gamers talking vaguely about Uncharted 2 and about how they had heard it was better than MW2 back in 09.

If market penetration was that high in 09, then it should be better in 11 since Uncharted 2 is something of an evergreen title. More Wal-Mart gamers, who are the largest group of video game purchasers, will be familiar with the franchise.

Or maybe we're all off and the game sells like ...

I rather liked the Eurogamer review.

The reason people are upset is that they look at the 8/10 and freak. I read the review as being more existential in nature. It's not about the game's quality, that's beyond argument. It's about the principle of games as an interactive medium and where Uncharted 3 falls into this category.

Uncharted is one of the very few games where this discussion can even apply. The score isn't representative of ...

There are some really odd differences here.

Just looking into the foreground the 360 has better textures, but looking into the background seems to favor the PS3. Lighting is all over the place, sometimes it looks better on one console, sometimes it looks better on another. Same with shadows. Color saturation is up, then down for both releases. And did anyone else notice that civilians in different versions are wearing different clothing? What was the reason behind that...

Adam Sessler is an excellent game critic. I'm just going to say that right now. And he pretty much admits at the end of the review, which you should read don't just look at the score and flip out, that this game is just unfortunate enough to follow one of the best games of all time.

Anyone not expecting these reactions from some of the gaming press just hasn't fully comprehended how massive an achievement Uncharted 2 actually was.

Was expecting an 8 from Edge.

The guys over their are total wildcards when it comes to reviews. Good for Uncharted 3. Skyward Sword gets a 10 though? That goes against all the bad publicity that's followed that game.

Now I'm curious if that LoZ: SS is actually going to beat our, admittedly low, expectations or if it's just Edge being Edge.

I would unironically buy Unkarted if ND made it. I have that much faith in them, and Crash Team Racing was damn fun.

Tsk, tsk.

The SPAS-12 is semi-auto, not pump action, there is a pump, but it's redundant unless you're loading a particular round.

The SAS-12, which is a model used by civillians and police, is the pump-action version.

Why is it the non-gun porn games, Uncharted and Black Ops, got this right when the actual gun porn games, MW2 and BF3, got this wrong?

No bosses?

That would seem to be counter indicated by what we've seen of the plane section. Maybe they've just refined it from that dreadful section in UC2 where you fistfight the guy on the train who was wearing magical invincibile invisible armor that made him immune to bullets and grenades.

Only part of that game that played like crap, made no sense, did nothing to build climax, and didn't move the story along.

Putting aside the fact that if you throw enough power at anything it'll look good, imagine what uncompressed versions of Rage or Crysis would look like with two Fermis, turning up settings doesn't add detail.

If you crank up framerate, resolution, and anti-aliasing you'll get a beautiful, smooth product, but that's just tinkering on the edges if the built in assets aren't detailed. The texture detail alone on the games you've mentioned absolutely butt...

Actually the Uncharted engine is a technical marvel.

The train in UC2 moves in real time, that's why aiming gets screwed up when the train turns. It's path is determined, but not pre-rendered; and the waves in UC3 that rock the ship are completely procedurally generated, meaning that each rock of the boat is different for everybody.

The biggest physics object in HL, that I can think of anyway, is the bridge section in Eps. 2, but even that was just a...

The games you have mentioned, by and large, are not diverse. Most are FPS's. They differ tremendously in art style and feel, but I wouldn't put it on the same level of diversity as the UE3 or even something like the Resistance engine, which switches back and forth between a 30fps shooter and a 60fps action platformer.

PS3/PC cross-platform play is not a technical hurdle, it's more about getting permission from Sony to do it than anything else.

I refuse to believe that Valve cannot do both at the same time. They're a billion dollar company with over 250 employees.

And the Source Engine's physics are not cutting edge anymore. They're better than most games, because most games don't even try to have advanced physics, but seesaws and momentum tricks have nothing on the environmental destruction in Crysis 1 or the procedurally generated waves in Uncharted 3.

Valve's saving grace ...

/facepalm

This is getting ridiculous. The whole point of the Source engine was that it had a new set of physics and traded long load times between levels for short loads mid-level.

But we're past that now. For example, the Uncharted engine has much more complicated physics, like movement on objects traveling in real-time, and it manages to do it without any load times. And the Uncharted engine looks phenomenal to boot.

Clearly Valve...
